Monte Pisano, famous for being the scene of battles between Pisa and Lucca for more than 400 years, adds a touch of history to this already fascinating location. The villa was built in the 17th century as the summer residence of the noble Controni family, well-known merchants who acquired the Pfanner Palace in downtown Lucca in 1680. In 1692, Carlo Controni hosted Prince Frederick of Denmark and Norway during his Grand Tour of Italy. For centuries, the estate was also fertile ground for the cultivation of rare flowers and housed a chapel, stables and an oil mill. But the villa is most famous for being the residence of Felice Matteucci, the genius who invented the combustion engine in 1853.
